Search Berrien County Released Inmates

Berrien County released inmates can be found through records that match the system responsible for the custody event. A Berrien County released inmate search starts with the county jail lookup for an adult jail booking, while state corrections records apply only after a person enters state jurisdiction. Court files can explain the legal event behind release. Berrien County released inmates may have left on bond, completed a jail term, moved to supervision, or transferred to another agency. To search for Berrien County released inmates accurately, use the release date and at least one more identifier, then confirm what happened next.

Understanding Berrien County Releases

A Berrien County release means one custody episode ended at a particular agency. It does not always mean the criminal case ended or that the person entered the community. An adult may leave the Berrien County Jail after posting bond, by recognizance order, when a county sentence is complete, after dismissal, or under another court order. A person may also leave the county jail through transfer to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, federal authorities, or immigration authorities. A transfer is continued custody, not community release.

The official Berrien County Inmate Lookup Tool, or IML, is the first source for an adult county booking because it has an explicit “Include released inmates” control. A result with a populated Release Date shows that the listed booking is no longer active. The court record may be needed to identify bond, dismissal, sentence completion, or commitment. If MDOC took custody, OTIS becomes the proper locator after intake. Juvenile releases follow a separate, confidential court path and do not appear in the adult IML.

Release
The end of custody at the listed agency, sometimes followed by conditions or supervision.
Transfer
A move from one custodian to another without release to the community.
Parole
Community supervision after a state-prison sentence, ordered by the Michigan Parole Board.
Discharge
The end of an agency's legal custody or supervision on the matter.

Berrien County Release Types

The label matters because it controls the next verification step. A Release Date alone proves the booking ended, but it does not describe the legal basis or destination. Match the IML record to a court entry or the receiving agency when a precise outcome matters.

Release typeMeaningNext record
Bond or recognizancePretrial custody ended under court-set terms; the case can remain open.Berrien court docket and IML
Time servedThe county jail term ended after jail credit and any lawful good-time calculation.Judgment, jail out date, and final Release Date
ProbationThe court ordered community supervision, which does not imply a state-prison stay.Court probation order and, when applicable, OTIS
ParoleA state prisoner left a secure facility but remains under MDOC supervision.OTIS Date Paroled and supervising office
Dismissal or court orderThe court authorized release; the docket shows whether the case itself ended.Register of actions and order
TransferAnother jail, MDOC, federal, immigration, or treatment authority assumed custody.Receiving agency locator or court order

Escape is not a release. Death can end a custody episode, but it must be described by the official record. A “not found” result also proves nothing by itself because spelling, aliases, retention, confidentiality, transfer timing, and data entry can all affect a search.

Note: A Berrien Release Date confirms the booking ended, while the court or receiving agency explains the legal reason and destination.

Berrien County Release Record Fields

The released-inclusive IML result table provides a compact set of fields that can tie a person to one county booking. Open the detailed booking when available. A court file or written Sheriff Records response may add the disposition, exact time, destination, or booking photograph that the public results table does not state.

FieldWhat it shows
Inmate NameLast, first, and middle name shown for the booking.
Booking NumberA number for that custody episode, useful in a narrow records request.
Permanent IDA county identifier that can help distinguish bookings for one person.
Date of BirthA matching field that helps separate people with similar names.
Release DateThe date the listed booking stopped being active at the county jail.

The public IML does not promise a retention period. It should not be treated as a complete lifetime archive. Keep separate booking numbers separate, and use two identifiers whenever possible. Charges recorded with a booking are accusations unless the court disposition establishes an outcome.

The official Berrien County IML shows the released-inmate control used for this search.

The screen separates name and identifier searches and requires the released option to be selected before an old booking can be returned.

Request Berrien County Release Records

Sheriff Records is the durable source when IML lacks an exact timestamp, recorded disposition, destination, or photograph. Ask for existing records rather than an explanation the office would have to create. A tight booking or date range helps locate the material and may reduce lawful search and separation costs.

  1. Collect the full name, date of birth, aliases, booking number, and an approximate booking range.
  2. Open the Sheriff FOIA request form and use “Other, please explain.”
  3. Ask for the booking and release record, booking and release date or time, recorded disposition or destination if nonexempt, and photograph.
  4. Request electronic copies and ask for notice before costs exceed a stated limit.
  5. Submit by the form's channels, including email or fax, and keep the response with the matching IML and court records.

Michigan FOIA generally calls for a response within five business days. The agency may grant, deny, grant in part, or issue one extension notice of no more than ten business days. That response date is not always the production date. Statutory labor, copy, media, and mailing charges may apply, and a qualifying request can require a deposit.

Note: Ask for segregable nonexempt portions if part of a Berrien County release record is withheld.

Berrien County Release Record Law

Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, begins with public access to records prepared, owned, used, possessed, or retained for an official function, subject to exemptions. Booking and release data, jail logs, discharge documents, and booking photos can fall within that scope. Redaction or withholding may still apply to an active enforcement matter, protected privacy under the statutory test, confidential methods or sources, security details, or material another law makes nonpublic.

A set-aside can change normal public visibility, and OTIS says it removes information when the sentencing court or operation of law sets a conviction aside. The timing does not run from release alone. Adult eligibility, offense exclusions, conviction counts, and the latest qualifying completion event control under current law. Juvenile material has separate confidentiality rules. The Berrien County Juvenile Center does not publish youth identities through the adult inmate lookup.

Important: A missing public result can reflect retention, a set-aside, confidentiality, a transfer, or a data mismatch. It does not establish a legal conclusion.

Berrien County Bond Releases

The Berrien Trial Court explains that a judge sets bond conditions and amount at arraignment. Posting bond permits a person to leave custody, but it does not end the prosecution. The case continues unless a later docket entry shows dismissal or another final disposition. That distinction is central when an IML result supplies a Release Date but no clear reason.

Match the date to the Berrien District Court arraignment process and the register of actions. An order modifying bond can also explain a later exit. The jail landing page says bond information is accurate for bookings beginning June 12, 2025 forward, so older bond details deserve court-file verification.

Does bond release mean the charge was dismissed? No. It means pretrial custody ended under the court's terms. The docket is the source for the case outcome.

Berrien County Jail Turnover

The Sheriff's 2024 report lists 4,892 bookings at the Berrien County Jail, which has a rated capacity of 341, and an average daily classified population of 307. These figures show substantial turnover through the adult jail. They cannot be relabeled as 4,892 releases. The total can include repeated bookings, while exits include community releases, transfers, and other outcomes.

4,8922024 bookings
341rated capacity
307average daily classified population

The figures explain why a current roster changes often and why disappearance from it is weak proof. A released-inclusive IML result and a second official source give a far sounder answer.

Note: Annual bookings measure jail activity, not unique people released to the Berrien County community during the reporting year.

Berrien County Release Property

The Berrien jail rulebook addresses details that can remain important after physical custody ends. Remaining account funds are returned after outstanding charges are determined. If the person is sent to prison, a check travels to the prison through transport staff. A commissary order delivered after a Tuesday release is held for seven days and must be claimed during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the rulebook says no credit is given.

Note: Berrien County does not publish a normal release hour, exit door, family waiting point, or transportation arrangement.

Berrien County Fees After Release

The jail rulebook states that $12 is deducted from money held at booking. It also says outstanding medical, tether, fines and costs, and other court obligations can be deducted before the remaining account funds are returned. Unpaid medical costs can be billed after release and may be referred for collection. These financial effects can continue after custody ends, but they do not show that the person is still held.

Account reconciliation is distinct from the legal release record. Use IML and the court file to confirm custody and case status. For a question about the current account or property procedure, call Berrien County Jail at 269-983-7141 ext. 7777 rather than estimating a balance from the published rules.

Berrien County Release Court Path

Berrien County's local court route depends on the stage and charge. District Court handles misdemeanors and early felony steps such as arraignment and preliminary examination. A felony bound over for trial proceeds in Circuit Court, and felony criminal files are maintained by the County Clerk. A county Release Date should be matched to the correct court and stage instead of a broad statewide search alone.

Start with MiCOURT Case Search and select the offered Berrien location. If the needed order or disposition is not online, the County Clerk accepts requests at 811 Port Street, Room 123, St. Joseph, MI 49085, at 269-983-7111 ext. 8368. The published Berrien-only record check costs $10 per person; certified documents cost $11 plus $1 per page.

A register of actions, bond order, dismissal, judgment, probation order, commitment order, or probation discharge can explain why the jail booking ended. Ask for that specific record when the event is known.

Find Berrien County Released Inmates

Start with the last agency known to hold the person. The county IML covers adult Berrien jail bookings, including released records when its checkbox is selected. OTIS does not cover a jail-only sentence. It applies to MDOC prisoners, parolees, many probationers, and people discharged within its public post-discharge window.

  1. Open IML, enter exact first and last name plus date of birth when known, and select “Include released inmates.”
  2. When an identifier is available, try Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number with the same released option.
  3. Read the Release Date and open the matching booking detail. Compare at least two identifiers.
  4. Check MiCOURT or the Berrien court file for the bond, dismissal, sentence, probation, commitment, or discharge event.
  5. If the record shows an MDOC transfer, search OTIS after state intake. For a federal sentence, use the BOP locator.
  6. Use MI-VINE for a timely event alert, then verify the event in IML, OTIS, or the court record.
  7. Request the existing release record when the public tools do not supply the needed detail.
Important: Released people often leave a current-custody roster. Search the released-inclusive record rather than treating absence as proof.

The Berrien County Jail Releases: 24 Hours page explains why the county search is not an exhaustive same-day feed.

Berrien County Recent Release Search

Berrien County publishes no verified prebuilt rolling list for everyone released in the last 24 or 72 hours. IML instead supports a person-specific search and can return released bookings with a Release Date. The landing-page quick search is based on booking date, not release date, and its warning that recent bookings can take up to 24 hours to appear is not a release-update schedule.

A narrowly dated FOIA request can ask for an existing jail release log, if one is maintained, without asking the Sheriff to create a new report. The county does not publish a release-feed cadence or released-record retention period. For one known person, IML remains the strongest first step.

Berrien County Release Supervision

Parole follows a state-prison sentence and is ordered by the Michigan Parole Board. Probation is imposed by a court and can occur without prison. OTIS may show parole, probation, discharged, or absconder status along with a supervising office. Berrien County falls in MDOC Region 8, with offices in Benton Harbor, Niles, and St. Joseph.

A Date Paroled confirms the start of parole, not the end of state control. A discharge entry is stronger evidence that MDOC supervision ended. The full office and verification route is covered on the Berrien County Probation & Parole page.

Note: Use a field office to correct or route supervision data, not to seek private case-management details.

Berrien Release Alerts and Transfers

MI-VINE provides free custody information and release, transfer, escape, bond-release, and court-ordered-discharge alerts by supported channels. Search the exact person, compare the reporting agency and identifiers, and register only after confirming the record. An alert is timely notice, not a certified release record. Recheck the county IML, OTIS, or court file when the legal reason matters.

Federal and immigration paths stay separate. The BOP locator covers federal prisoners and many former federal prisoners from 1982 forward; a “Released” date or “Not in BOP custody” does not prove freedom from every other authority. ICE ODLS locates current immigration detention and is not a historical release archive. An ICE Number in Berrien IML helps locate a county booking record but does not prove current ICE custody.

Match Berrien Release to Custody

Use the system that owned the relevant custody episode. Similar wording across locators can hide very different legal states.

Adult county booking
Use Berrien IML, select released inmates, and read the Release Date.
County case event
Use MiCOURT or the Berrien court file for a bond, dismissal, sentence, or commitment entry.
MDOC custody or supervision
Use OTIS and read Michigan’s exact status and date labels.
Federal sentence
Use the BOP Inmate Locator, while remembering that BOP release does not rule out other custody.
Immigration detention
Use ICE ODLS for present detention; no result does not establish a historical release.
Juvenile detention
Use the Family Division or an authorized BCJC contact because youth release records are confidential.

Why is a released person missing? The record may use another spelling, sit outside public retention, be confidential, or belong to another system. Continue the jurisdictional checks instead of drawing a conclusion from one search.

Note: Always keep the county jail, MDOC, federal, immigration, and confidential juvenile record systems separate when matching release information.

Berrien County Release Facilities

Berrien County Jail is the adult county facility. Community releases can be confirmed in IML, while MDOC and other-agency transfers require the receiving locator. The Berrien County Juvenile Center has a secure unit, and its Alternative Detention Program is a staff-secure option. Both juvenile paths are controlled by the Family Division and court authorization, not the adult public lookup.

  • Berrien County Jail: adult jail release or transfer, first checked through IML.
  • Berrien County Juvenile Center: secure detention with confidential, court-authorized dispositions.
  • Alternative Detention Program: a court-controlled move home, to supervision, or to another placement.

No operating MDOC prison, BOP institution, or dedicated ICE detention center was identified inside Berrien County. A local case can still lead to one of those systems elsewhere, so facility geography never replaces the proper statewide or federal search.
