Berrien County 24 Hour Releases
No official prebuilt Berrien County list shows every person released today or during a rolling 24-hour period. The county's detailed Inmate Lookup Tool, or IML, serves a narrower and more reliable task: it lets a user search a known person and select “Include released inmates.” A matching result can display a Release Date. That is direct evidence that the listed booking is no longer active, but it is not an exhaustive daily feed.
The separate quick search on the Sheriff's landing page searches by booking date. It must not be read as a release-date report. Its warning that recently booked people may take up to 24 hours to appear describes booking delay, not a promised schedule for release updates. The county directs users to IML for more detailed information.

Check Berrien County Same-Day Releases
A person-specific check begins with exact identifying details. One name alone can point to the wrong booking, especially when the same person has more than one custody episode. Use the booking number or permanent ID when it is known.
- Open the official Berrien County IML.
- Enter first and last name with date of birth when available, then check “Include released inmates.”
- Alternatively, search by Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number, again including released records.
- Read the Release Date and compare name, date of birth, and identifiers with the expected person.
- Open the detailed booking if available. Keep the booking number tied to that specific release date.
- Check MiCOURT or the Berrien court file for bond, dismissal, sentence completion, probation, or commitment around the same date.
- Call or request the Sheriff record when an exact timestamp, release disposition, or destination is needed.

Berrien 24 Hour Release Fields
Because no rolling feed exists, the relevant fields are those observed in released-inclusive IML results. Do not add an exact time, release type, destination, or facility detail unless the booking page, court record, or written response actually supplies it.

A Release Date does not answer what happened next. A transfer to MDOC or another jail is not community release. Bond ends pretrial jail custody but does not dispose of the case. The court file or receiving system supplies that context.

Request Berrien 24 Hour Records
A request for a daily set should ask for an existing record, not demand that the Sheriff create a new report. State a precise start and end time. Ask for the existing jail release log or list, if maintained, for that period, including booking number, release date and time, and recorded disposition, subject to lawful redaction.
Use the Berrien Sheriff FOIA form and submit it to Sheriff Records at 919 Port Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085. The office lists 269-983-7141 ext. 7211, fax 269-982-8650, and sdrecords@berriencounty.org. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Michigan FOIA generally requires a response within five business days. The agency may grant, deny, grant in part, or issue one extension notice of no more than ten business days. A response is not always production. Lawful labor, copying, media, and mailing charges may apply. Narrow dates help control scope and cost.
Note: The Berrien IML publishes no retention promise, so a failed old search is not proof that no booking occurred.
Berrien Release or Transfer
A released-inclusive county result with a Release Date shows the Berrien booking ended. It does not guarantee the person is free in the community. If MDOC received the person, search OTIS after intake. If another county assumed custody, contact that jurisdiction. For federal custody, use the BOP locator. ICE ODLS is for current immigration detention and is not a historical county release archive.
MI-VINE can send supported release, transfer, escape, bond-release, and court-ordered-discharge alerts. It is useful for timely notice but does not replace the underlying jail or court record. Compare the agency and identifying details before registering, then verify the event when exact legal meaning matters.
A live-roster result means the booking remains active at that update. A released record is a past booking result. Neither alone explains the court outcome, and an escape must never be called a release.
Berrien Bond Release Today
Berrien's Trial Court says a judge sets bond amount and conditions at arraignment and that posting bond permits release. The prosecution continues unless the docket later records dismissal or another final result. Therefore, a same-day IML Release Date should be paired with the arraignment or bond entry before describing the legal event.
A recognizance order can release someone without a conventional cash or surety payment, though conditions may still apply. The county landing page limits the stated accuracy of displayed bond information to bookings from June 12, 2025 forward. For an older booking or a changed bond, use the Berrien court record rather than assuming the booking screen is complete.
Was a released person cleared of the charge? A release date cannot answer that. Read the disposition in the correct court file.
Berrien Release Window Limits
The IML is unusually useful because released records are an intended search mode. Yet Berrien County publishes neither a released-record retention period nor a 24-hour release window. This combination supports a strong person-specific check but not a complete list of everyone who left during a chosen day.
Keep the language precise: “released record found for this booking” or “not found in this search at this time.” Name spelling, aliases, delayed entry, a new custodian, confidentiality, or a record outside public display can change the result. Checking two identifiers and a second official source is the best safeguard.
Match Berrien Same-Day Releases
A reliable match uses more than a name. Start with full first and last name, then compare date of birth and the booking number or permanent ID. When the spelling is uncertain, the identifier side of IML can accept a State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number. The ICE Number is only a county search key in this context. It does not establish that immigration authorities now hold the person.
Keep each booking episode distinct. One person may have several Berrien booking numbers and several release dates. A charge line or booking photograph cannot prove how the case ended. Compare the county record with the matching court case number, charge, and date. If a common name and similar age are the only points in common, the identification is not strong enough.
A missing result has several possible causes. The record may use an alias or different spelling, be outside the county's unpublished public retention span, remain confidential, or belong to a different custodian. State the limited result instead of treating it as proof of release. Sheriff Records can search a narrow booking range when the online tool does not resolve the match.
Note: A result from the wrong booking can produce a real release date for the wrong custody episode.
Confirm Berrien Release Reasons
The legal reason for a same-day exit often sits outside the IML results row. A bond or recognizance release ends pretrial detention under court terms, but the prosecution remains pending. A time-served release follows the sentence, jail credit, and Berrien's lawful good-time calculation. Probation places the person in the community under a court order. Parole follows state prison and keeps the person under MDOC supervision.
A dismissal or other court order should be read in the docket because the entry shows whether the whole case ended. A commitment or transport to MDOC is a transfer, not release to the community. Likewise, a hold from another county, federal authority, or immigration authority can move custody without making the person free. The destination system, not mere absence from Berrien's active population, confirms that next stage.
For county cases, a register of actions may show arraignment, bond changes, plea, dismissal, judgment, jail credit, probation, commitment, or later discharge. Felony files are kept by the Berrien County Clerk. A sentence date by itself does not prove the actual exit date, and an IML Release Date by itself does not state the case result. Together, the jail and court records answer both questions.
Berrien Release App Status
A May 25, 2026 local report said the Berrien County Sheriff's Office was developing a free app with proposed jail and inmate information, alerts, contacts, maps, news, and a sex-offender list. The report did not establish that the app was live or that it offered a released-person view.
Do not substitute the planned app for the official IML. Until the Sheriff provides an official store link and confirms the current feature set, the safe routes remain IML, the jail line, Sheriff Records, the court file, and MI-VINE.
