Berrien County 72 Hour Releases
The Berrien County Sheriff offers an official Inmate Lookup Tool with an “Include released inmates” option. It can find a past booking for a known person and return a Release Date. It does not publish a prebuilt report for a rolling three-day period. No official 72-hour release URL, update cadence, or released-record retention period was found.
A three-day frame still serves a useful records purpose. It gives a precise start and end for checking one person's court events or requesting an existing Sheriff release log. It can span a weekend without forcing a same-day guess. Yet the window must come from the request or verified dates, not a list constructed from names that vanish from a current roster.
Note: Berrien’s released-inclusive IML supports a known-person check, not an exhaustive report of all releases during three days.
Check Berrien Three-Day Releases
For one person, use exact identifiers and keep each booking episode separate. A booking number is especially useful because the same person can have several bookings with different release dates.
- Open the Berrien County IML.
- Search the full first and last name with date of birth when known, and check “Include released inmates.”
- If available, search by Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number.
- Compare the returned name, date of birth, booking number, and permanent ID before reading the Release Date.
- Decide whether that date falls within the intended three-day period. Do not assume the result set itself is filtered to 72 hours.
- Check the Berrien court docket for a bond, dismissal, sentence, probation, or commitment entry near the release.
- Request an existing release log for the exact period if the goal is the whole window rather than one known person.

Berrien 72 Hour Release Fields
The IML's observed released-inclusive results contain five fields. They help identify one booking but do not amount to a daily or three-day report. An exact release time, type, reason, or destination may require the booking detail, court file, or Sheriff response.

A populated Release Date is stronger than simple absence from a current roster. Still, the date alone cannot distinguish release to the community from transfer to MDOC, another county, federal custody, immigration custody, or a treatment placement. Follow the legal event into the next official system.
Berrien Weekend Release Checks
Berrien County publishes no special weekend or holiday release feed. A 72-hour interval is therefore a request frame, not a feature hidden inside IML. Record the exact start and end, including times, and search known people individually. When staff processing or a receiving agency crosses a day boundary, the court, jail record, and destination record may not appear at the same moment.
The Sheriff's quick-search warning is limited to recent bookings, which may take up to 24 hours to appear there. It does not state that release updates follow the same delay. For detailed information, use IML. If the release remains unclear after the weekend, contact Sheriff Records during its published weekday hours.
Note: A release date can fall in the three-day span even when the related court entry or state intake appears later.
Request Berrien Three-Day Records
A records request should seek an existing log or list, if maintained. Suggested wording is: “Please provide the existing jail release log/list, if maintained, for [start date/time] through [end date/time], including booking number, release date/time, and release disposition, subject to lawful redaction.” This wording does not ask the Sheriff to compile a new custom report.
Submit the Sheriff FOIA form to the Records Division at 919 Port Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085. The office lists 269-983-7141 ext. 7211, sdrecords@berriencounty.org, fax 269-982-8650, and weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Michigan FOIA generally provides five business days for a response and allows one extension notice of up to ten business days. Actual production can take longer. Charges may include lawful labor, copying, nonpaper media, and mailing. Ask for electronic delivery and a fee estimate when cost matters.

Berrien Release Window Limits
Berrien's system has a distinctive combination: an intentional released-record search but no preset 24-hour or 72-hour report. That makes it more useful than a current-only roster for a known person, while leaving it unsuitable for claims about every person released over a weekend.
A negative result should be stated as “not found in this search at this time.” The person may be listed under another spelling, alias, or identifier; may have transferred; may be outside public retention; or may have a confidential or nonpublic record. Two identifiers plus a second official source reduce mistaken matches.
Berrien Three-Day Custody Paths
The source used after a Berrien booking depends on where custody went during the three-day period. A date in IML marks the end of the county booking. The next locator can show whether that exit led to state prison, federal custody, immigration detention, or community supervision.

An IML ICE Number search option does not mean the county database is an ICE locator. BOP wording such as “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” also has limits because another sovereign may hold the person. The record from each custodian answers only its own part of the custody path.
Match Berrien Three-Day Records
Search accuracy becomes more important when a three-day period contains several bookings or court events. Use full name and date of birth, then compare booking number or permanent ID. An exact identifier is better than a broad name search. A person can have more than one booking, and each episode can end on a different date for a different reason.
The court file can connect the date to legal authority. District Court handles misdemeanors and the early stages of felony cases, including arraignment and preliminary examination. Felony matters bound over proceed in Circuit Court, where the County Clerk maintains the criminal file. Search the right Berrien court and match case number, charge, booking period, and order date.
If a name does not appear, do not convert the absence into a release claim. An alias, data delay, confidential record, transfer, or public-retention limit can explain the result. The Sheriff's landing page warns only that recently booked people can take up to 24 hours to appear in the quick search. It does not publish a release-entry schedule. IML, the court record, and a narrow Sheriff request form the safer three-source chain.
Verify Berrien Release Outcomes
The county release record and court file answer different questions. IML establishes that the booking ended. The Berrien Trial Court record can show bond, dismissal, judgment, jail credit, probation, commitment, or a later discharge. Posting bond allows release but does not end the case.
If MDOC received the person, OTIS becomes the controlling state locator after intake. OTIS does not cover a jail-only sentence. A parole status means the person left prison but remains supervised, while discharge means MDOC control ended on that matter. For federal custody, use the BOP locator. ICE ODLS concerns current immigration detention and cannot supply a county three-day release history.
MI-VINE can provide supported alerts for release, transfer, escape, bond release, and court-ordered discharge. Treat an alert as a prompt to check IML, OTIS, or the court. An alert does not replace a certified record.
Berrien Juvenile Release Privacy
The adult IML and any requested adult jail release log are not the route for youth held through the Berrien County Juvenile Center. Youth leave only with court authorization, and possible outcomes include release with probation and services, foster placement, MDHHS placement, private residential treatment, or transfer to another jurisdiction.
Youth identities are confidential unless disclosure is authorized by court order, statute, or valid release. A parent, guardian, attorney, or other authorized person should use the Family Division and controlling court order. No public 72-hour juvenile release list should be inferred or requested as if it were an adult roster.
Note: Moving from secure detention to another placement does not necessarily mean the juvenile case or court supervision ended.
