Berrien Release Mugshots as Records
A mugshot is the photograph created during booking. It documents an arrest and custody episode, not guilt or the final result of a case. Release from the Berrien County Jail ends that custody episode, but it does not erase the booking photograph from the agency's records. The image may remain in the detailed county lookup or require a records request after release.
Michigan appellate authority treats county-jail booking photographs as public records under FOIA, subject to exemptions that apply to the specific record and time. The accurate rule is “requestable public record, subject to applicable exemption,” not a promise that every photograph will always be displayed or released without redaction.
The Berrien IML result and court file should be used with the photograph. Charges are accusations until disposition, and the same person can have more than one booking and image. Match the booking number, date of birth, and booking period before treating a photo as the right record.
Where Berrien Release Mugshots Appear
Start with official sources. The source changes with the custody system, and an MDOC offender photograph is not necessarily the image taken at a Berrien booking. VINELink may help identify a custody record but is not documented as the durable photo source for this county.

No commercial mugshot or data-broker link is needed for the Berrien workflow because the county offers an official released-inclusive search and Sheriff Records accepts requests. An unofficial image should never be the sole basis for identifying a person or describing a release.
Berrien Sheriff Lookup and App
The official Berrien Inmate Lookup Tool is the first booking-photo channel. Enter the name and optional date of birth, check Include released inmates, and open the correct booking detail. Identifier searches can use Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number. The Release Date column confirms that the listed booking ended.
Berrien does not publish a verified prebuilt list of everyone released in a recent time window. The booking-date Quick Search must not be treated as a release-date feed. For that reason, use a person-specific match rather than scraping names that disappear from a current roster. The Berrien 24-hour release guide explains that limit.
A May 25, 2026 local report said the sheriff was working with TheSheriffApp.com on a free app. Proposed features included jail information, alerts, news, contacts, maps, and a sex-offender list. The research did not confirm a live official app or a released-photo view. It must remain labeled planned and unverified unless an official sheriff page and app-store listing confirm otherwise.
App status: A development announcement is not proof that a Berrien sheriff app is live or that it displays released booking photos.

Request a Berrien Booking Photo
If the detailed IML no longer shows the image, request the existing photograph from the Berrien County Sheriff Records Division. The office is at 919 Port Street, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The records line is 269-983-7141 extension 7211.
- Use the Sheriff FOIA form and choose “Other, please explain.”
- Identify the person by full name and date of birth, plus aliases if known.
- Add the booking number and a tight booking-date range.
- Ask for “the booking photograph associated with booking number [number]” and any specific release field still needed.
- Request an electronic copy and ask for notice before fees exceed a chosen amount.
- Submit by a channel printed on the form, including sdrecords@berriencounty.org or fax 269-982-8650.
Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, generally requires a response within five business days by granting, denying, partly granting, or issuing one extension notice of no more than ten business days. A response is not a promise that production occurs on day five. Lawful labor, copying, media, and mailing fees may apply, and qualifying requests can require a deposit.
Ask for an existing record, not an agency-created explanation. If the IML already supplies the Release Date, requesting only the missing photo or disposition can narrow the work. The Sheriff Records page provides the current office route.
Berrien News and Third-Party Images
Local news outlets sometimes publish sheriff-provided images with reports about arrests or court events. Such an image proves what the outlet published on that date. It does not certify current release status, final disposition, or that the photograph still matches the relevant booking episode. Read the publication date, agency attribution, and case posture.
Third-party archives can retain images after an official page changes. Their data may be stale, mislabeled, duplicated, or detached from the court result. Use the image only as a lead to a booking number or date, then verify every key fact through Berrien IML, Sheriff Records, the court, or OTIS. No commercial publisher deserves an endorsement merely because it has an old image.
Do not pay a removal service on the assumption that payment changes the official record. The research found no Michigan statute specifically prohibiting pay-to-remove mugshot sites. Ordinary public-record rules, court nonpublic status, site policies, and laws that address deceptive or unlawful conduct remain separate issues.
Berrien Mugshots After Set-Aside
Michigan's adult conviction set-aside law is MCL 780.621 and following sections. Eligibility and timing depend on the offense, number and type of convictions, exclusions, and the latest completion event named by law. A Berrien jail Release Date by itself does not start every waiting period. Completion of probation, parole, or imprisonment may control.
A set-aside can make a conviction nonpublic through ordinary court access, and OTIS says it removes information when the sentencing court or operation of law sets aside the conviction. That does not guarantee that every independently published historical photo vanishes at once. Send a copy of the court order and precise correction request to the official custodian or publisher that holds the item.
If an official Berrien page shows a wrong image or links it to the wrong person, identify the exact booking, URL, and error for Sheriff Records. If OTIS is wrong because of sentencing data, MDOC directs correction through the sentencing court. Supervision-data errors go to the listed field office.

MDOC Photos for Berrien Releases
OTIS can include a Michigan offender photograph for a person who entered MDOC jurisdiction. It does not cover people sentenced only to a county jail, so it is not a fallback for every Berrien booking. Some profiles have no image because no electronic photograph existed or the person left before one was taken.
A state corrections photo may come from a different event than the Berrien booking image. Compare the MDOC number, aliases, physical details, sentencing county, and offense. For a discharged person, remember that the public OTIS window generally lasts three years after discharge. After that window, absence is not proof that no state record or image existed.
MDOC states that a PENPACK for a paroled or discharged person may include an offender photo if available, with other identified records such as a judgment or discharge certificate. Access and exemptions still apply. Current prisoner questions go to MDOC's current-record contact, while past prisoner records up to six years post release use its retention contact or FOIA.
Match a Berrien Booking Photo
Begin with the booking episode, not the face alone. Berrien released-inclusive results show name, Booking Number, Permanent ID, date of birth, and Release Date. These fields separate repeat bookings and help tie the photograph to the right custody period.
- Match full name and date of birth.
- Record the Booking Number and Permanent ID.
- Open the detail and compare booking dates and available charge data.
- Pair the Release Date with the Berrien court docket.
- Describe charges as accusations unless the court file supplies a disposition.
The sheriff's landing page says bond information is accurate for bookings from June 12, 2025 forward. Older bond information may not be represented the same way. Use the court file when bond or final outcome matters, and do not infer guilt or case resolution from a photograph.

The Berrien court file can supply the missing context through a register of actions, judgment, dismissal, bond order, or probation order. For a felony file not available online, the County Clerk offers inspection and records requests. The photo and the court record serve different roles: one documents booking, while the other describes the legal path and disposition.
Save the source date with any image reference. A later release, new booking, corrected identity, or set-aside can change the public context even when an old copy remains online. Current official records should control the description.
When asking for correction, provide the booking number, exact page, image description, and supporting court or identity record. A precise request lets the custodian evaluate the claimed mismatch without confusing separate Berrien bookings.
